Ruse is the largest Bulgarian city on the Danube and the most significant transport, logistics, business and cultural centre of North Bulgaria. It is located 300 km from Sofia and 70 km from Bucharest.
Ruse welcomes its guests with an impressive architectural heritage inspired by the progressive European spirit of its citizens, who invited eminent European architects at the turn of the 20th century to build the architectural environment of the city. Today, dozens of heritage-listed buildings bear the European Heritage label. Ruse is a port on the Danube, where cultural traces from the West and the East, from the North and the South have landed and become rooted. The riverbank offers a variety of pleasant bars and areas to sit. Furthermore, there is the possibility to cycle along the river. Tourists can request a tour guide for the town and its surroundings and, in addition, for most of the distant sites in the municipality. These services are provided by the Regional History Museum in Ruse (http://www.museumruse.com/en/route_bg.html).
The Rock Churches near Ivanovo, which is part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage list, is also very interesting to visit and the itinerary is suitable for different forms of religious tourism. Near the town of Svishtov, on the banks of the Danube, the ancient town of Nove, a Roman legionary camp, is another site that is certainly worth a visit.
