About Destination
In Sarmisegetuza Regia in the Şurean Mountains, or Oraştie Mountains, as they are also known, are found some of the most important monuments left by the Dacians. Dacian villages and cities, scattered at the foot of the mountains or on the hills tops, are amazing by virtue of their placement, variety, richness and monumentality, intertwined with the beauty of the mountain landscape.
Besides Alba Iulia the nearest city is Deva, one of the oldest settlements in the country, with its first mention in 1269, but with archaeological discoveries indicating that the Deva territory has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. In 2012, in Victoria Square in Deva a musical fountain, which provides an entertaining show every night, was inaugurated.
Cheile Madei is a protected area of national interest in the southeast of the Metaliferi Mountains and one of the most popular climbing areas in Hunedoara, 88 km from Sarmizegetusa. Moreover, the area is hugely appreciated for its valuable landscape, flora and endemic thermophilic plants (heat-loving, unique to this area), but also for its spelunking value offered by the Jurassic limestone.
Retezat National Park, located 40 km from Sarmizegetusa, is famous for the large number of species of plants and wildlife that still exists here. The green forests and the tranquillity you feel in this place offer you a sense of rediscovery.
It is highly recommended that you visit the stone churches of Densus, Santamaria Orlea and Pesteana, as well as the impressive Gothic style Corvin Castle, 45 km from Sarmizegetusta.
